IMBB establishment

Prof. Ivan Minkov, Prof. Valentina Toneva, and Assoc. Prof Tsanko Gechev established the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies (IMBB) in 2011 with an aim to conduct cutting-edge research in molecular plant sciences with particular emphasis on plant stress physiology and development. Research is focused on deciphering the reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling network in Arabidopsis thaliana, the molecular mechanisms of desiccation tolerance in Haberlea rhodopensisFriv. and Ramonda serbica Panč, abiotic stresses (drought, low temperatures, heavy metals), and development (senescence).
Later the research at the Institute was widen with some topics demanding bioinformatics approaches – microRNAs and their participation of genes regulation and epigenetics. The technology aspects were introduced as molecular bio-nanotechnologies based on plant-derived virus nanoparticles, molecular virology and some medical aspects of the molecular biology.

Resurrection plants:Hope for crop drought tolerance (ReHOPE)

20-22 September 2018 Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The course is organized by the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies (IMBB), and co-organised by the University of Plovdiv and CPSBB. ReHOPE is devoted to the small but diverse unique group of resurrection plants that can survive extreme water shortages in air-dried state for years. The workshop created a platform where participants developed a comprehensive understanding of resurrection plant system biology and then put forward management strategies to overcome the drought stress.
